What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme, improving everything from strength to power, endurance, stamina, mobility and skill.
CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements done at high intensity. The CrossFit philosophy is broadly designed to cover all aspects of fitness: “Our specialty is not specialising.” This means a strength and conditioning program that prepares the human body for any feat. Because CrossFit workouts emphasize real life, functional movements, it is perfectly scalable for all fitness levels, from the beginner to the professional athlete.
A normal session includes a general warm up (to get your heart rate up), a specific warm up (to make sure you have the mobility and skills for the next bit), a strength component (to do what it says on the tin), and a progressive ‘metcon’ component (metabolic conditioning to us non-CrossFitters – a high intensity workout that gets you burning calories).
I’ve had a look at CrossFit on the web but I find it all a bit intimidating. What advice would you give to people like me who are too scared to give it a try?
Looking into classes, or watching videos on YouTube can give the impression that CrossFit is for the elite, for guys and girls with shredded six packs and otherworldly athleticism. This isn’t the case.
Do we have some super fit members? Naturally – that is the eventual goal, after all! But we also have members with very limited experience of training in the gym, let alone CrossFit. So if you feel like you’re going to be left behind by the class or embarrass yourself, I promise you’re not.
We have a very supportive community – there’s no judgement here! Come and try us for free! Hand on heart, I promise we’re not that scary.
Is CrossFit safe?
CrossFit is safe when done properly. This is why the Taster Session and Introductory Program is so important to developing the skills needed to participate in classes. Most people want to have an intense workout. In CrossFit, the mechanics of the movements come first, then intensity. This is why we do functional movements your body was meant to do.
What sort of personalities make for typical ‘CrossFitters’?
CrossFit attracts all sorts! Perhaps I am biased here, but I say most CrossFitters are driven, friendly and humble. Humble because you have to be in CrossFit – there is always a workout round the corner that will show you who’s really boss!
Aren’t you more expensive than a traditional gym?
If you are not familiar with CrossFit, you may think that our prices are higher than typical gym memberships. What do you get from a typical gym membership? You pay a flat fee to use the equipment. At CrossFit Caerphilly, we program your workouts, instruct movements, scale the workout if necessary, provide nutritional support, and are committed to each client every time you walk in the door.
How long are the contracts? Is there a cancellation fee?
We hate contracts and do not offer them. You pay on the 1st of every month and if you change your mind, we’ll give you your money back within three days of paying us. After that, just let us know before your next month’s charge and we’ll cancel your membership without penalty.
I’ve never done CrossFit, do I need experience or some minimum level of fitness?
No! Don’t worry, you are not alone. Just get started ! Our CrossFit Fundamentals program will teach you everything you need to know before taking part in our regular classes.
Our workouts and exercises scale to any level – from broomsticks to barbells, we’ll tailor the workout to your ability.
I am a woman, is this type of training right for me?
Currently, our gym has an equal amount of women members to men! Despite our ‘hardcore’ appearance, our members include pregnant women, new mums, working mums, and more. Our coaches specialise in being able to adapt the workouts to any fitness level so that the workouts will be challenging but do-able.
How will CrossFit change my body shape?
CrossFit burns fat. If you’re looking to get leaner, CrossFit will give you almost unparalleled results. It will also help you develop lean muscle.
A lot of women worry that CrossFit will make them bulky. I can’t emphasise enough how far from the truth this is. Will CrossFit help you develop some muscle? Absolutely. But you won’t turn into a Russian shot putter overnight!
How many times per week do I need to do CrossFit to get results?
We recommend that most of our members attend a minimum of 3 classes per week to start. Results are highly individualised and depend on motivation, experience, current physical condition and many other factors.
What about nutrition?
You will never see the results you want without a proper diet. If you starve your body using the wrong diet, you will not provide your body with the necessary nutrients to repair and improve itself after an intense WOD. On the other hand, pumping your body full of empty calories will have you packing on the pounds and unable to perform to your peak ability. At CrossFit Caerphilly we encourage a high protein, high nutrient, low glycemic diet.
Can I get results on just three, one-hour classes per week?
CrossFit workouts are designed to be very intense workouts that can put a lot of stress on your body, burning much more fat than ‘cardio’ training. Adding additional workouts on top of CrossFit can actually make progress slow down or halt completely. If you are currently participating in a sport or an activity (running, cycling, etc) and you would like to use CrossFit to enhance your training, our Coaches can help you tailor your training accordingly.
Do you offer discounts for families, students, active military, police, and firefighters?
Yes, please call for details.
Do you have childcare services?
We have a waiting room adjacent to the main workout area with video entertainment that children may use. This area is not supervised by CrossFit Caerphilly staff.
What is your policy for travelling CrossFitters?
The charge is £5 per session. Just email to let us know when you are coming.
What is the minimum age? What is the maximum age?
Our minimum member age is 14 years old for full classes or 5 years for Cross Fit Kids. There is no maximum age.
